Aristic Director Search

The Bellingham Chamber Chorale is a 40+-member auditioned community-based chamber choir which presents baroque, classical and early romantic works, as well as modern repertoire and newly commissioned works. BCC has a 15-year history in the culture life of Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Successful applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications: master’s degree or doctorate in music, preferably in choral conducting; three years or more experience conducting college/university or community vocal ensembles; orchestral experience within choral-orchestral repertoire; evidence of excellent understanding of vocal technique and diction.

Primary responsibilities of the Artistic Director include:

  • Providing overall artistic leadership for Bellingham Chamber Chorale
  • Overseeing all artistic aspects including choice of repertoire
  • Preparing for and conducting rehearsals and concerts; coaches guest artists and soloists
  • Auditioning and selecting new chorus members and re-auditioning current members
  • Selecting and contracting artistic personnel including orchestra musicians, guest vocal soloists
  • Serving as the primary artistic spokesperson for the organization, representing the BCC in media appearances, and participating in community activities that further the positive reputation of the organization
  • Working collaboratively with the President/Executive Director
  • Working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees to support organizational activities including, but not limited to, collaboration with the Board on selected Board initiatives (fundraising, donor cultivation).

Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation negotiable and commensurate with experience. This is a part time position.

December 2017 – Search committee/transition team is formed, develops position description recruitment materials, and outlines details of the search process. Advertise position.

January 2018 (1st half) – Applications due via e-mail by Jan 19th, 2018

January 2018 (2nd half) – Search committee meets to review resumes and asks qualified candidates to submit their credentials, a recording sample and a video of their work (if available). These candidates are provided with detailed background information on the chorus. Schedule interviews Jan 29-Feb 2nd. Select 3 to do rehearsal audition.

February 2018 (2nd half) – Rehearsal auditions Feb 12-16.  Committee meets to decide after final rehearsal audition.

March 2018 -Make decision. Candidate accepts. Announcement of decision is announced according to a carefully timed communication plan so that key internal stakeholders are informed before announcement made in the media.

June to August 2018 –  Plans for orienting new music director put in motion.
