BCC’s Commission – Elixir of the Solar Spectrum
Bellingham Chamber Chorale is proud to have completed a brand-new collaboration with local artists in the Pacific Northwest, resulting in a concert experience unlike any held in Bellingham before. Here’s what happened this June:
- Renowned Northwest poet, Carla Shafer, wrote a beautiful poem called Elixir of the Solar Spectrum – the natural wonder of the Pacific Northwest is inextricably woven into Shafer’s words. Read all about the inspiration, in our Interview with Carla Shafer.
- Reginald Unterseher, Washington State Music Teachers Association ‘Composer of the Year’ for 2013, created a brand-new composition based on, and tailored to, Shafer’s transcendent poem and the spirit of the Northwest. Learn more about Reg, his composition process, musical influences, and advice for young composers in our Interview with Reginald Unterseher.
- Bellingham Chamber Chorale, Bellingham’s own renowned choir, brought these two talented artists together to commission a new choral composition which we debuted on Saturday, June 7, at our “Northwest Passages” concert. The concert also featured other works by Northwest composers, and celebrated all the beauty and joy that surrounds and inspires us here in our corner of the country.
- Check out a review of the concert, submitted to us by 11 year old Fiona Kroontje. Thanks Fiona!
To achieve these goals, we created a KICKSTARTER campaign – and we achieved our goal thanks to the support of this wonderful community!
One of our own singers even created a beautiful quilt themed after Elixir…
We raffled the quilt, gave great rewards to our Kickstarter donors, and hosted a wine, cheese and honey tasting after the concert which gave our audience the chance to talk with Elixir‘s poet and composer.
Thank you for all the support – the BCC is entirely not-for-profit and volunteer-driven; supporters’ donations help us hire local musicians, buy repertoire, rent venues and present high quality concerts to our diverse audiences at affordable prices. This was the first time we had attempted such an ambitious project, and what a success – it certainly won’t be the last. Come to our next concert to see what we have in store for you!
